Being one of the highlights of the programming of the Teatro Cervantes of Málaga from this season, it serves with a Director who already surprised us more than pleasantly surprised with "La Averia", Blanca Portillo, and gives us back to José Luís Garcia-Perez, playing Don Juan Tenorio, that not "Don Juan" though the work is called and we have thus learned of his history classes and what we are taught reading. Q: listening to the press conference of the programming of the Teatro Cervantes, it was glad of you to come with this "Don Juan", but after researching what we present, the thing isn't going to be as I thought???
José Luis García-Pérez: The "Juan" that we are going to present is the closest "Juan" both Blanca and I, to the actual text of Zorrilla where is portrayed from the beginning with a lot of clarity. In the first text first thing he says is "wherever I went, I left a bitter memory of me". Most of course, like water. Certainly, we do not see him as a myth or as a hero, if not as a depraved being seeking to achieve their objectives above who you are, even, and this is the great drama, above itself.
Q: Is it you have reason because really when you study this book, they give you that romantic version?
José Luis García-Pérez: In the case of "Don Juan", Apart from that as society were again portrayed, if for us this and more after having spent a day as the "women's day", it is wrong that "Don Juan" is the national hero. In addition, it merges the romantic style of Zorrilla which is a literary style with personality, that it has little to do. You can write horror but talk about a heroic character. In this case, it is a deeply terrifying character that is written in a romantic style.
Q: When you did "La Averia", I know you said to Blanca Portillo that you wanted to make your Assembly of "Don Juan Tenorio", that you already had explained the intention which wanted to do?
José Luis García-Pérez: This is spoken from the beginning. I do not know exactly if it was in Malaga or Seville. After making a "La Averia" function, she was eager to put her hand to the text of "Don Juan" and for me being from Seville, I was very much liked the idea. Even more I liked the idea of calling "Don Juan" by name. I was interested in turning the tables to which so many times have seen of pens, swords, and some romanticism redeemed.
Q: will this give standing to go for her hand to other universal myths?
José Luis García-Pérez: hopefully. I believe that the texts and literature, universal myths are there to be interpreted. No author gave a program representing its function. The texts are to be used and to be seen with the eyes of today day and, from there, to analyse them, make them and give a new proposal to the public.
Q: like many people thought as I do, that to give the "Don Juan" which we all know, you'd have the candy as an actor until you discover "Juan Tenorio" that we present..
José Luis García-Pérez: no doubt about it. One thing is that we have it from a way to understand the character, and see that it is not just a hero and another thing is it's not a candy, that is absolutely, I spend it, making it. Another thing is to not be with him but theatrically speaking it is a wonderful character and is a spectacular function.
Q: The surprise comes not only with this approach, if not also with the staging, costumes....
José Luis García Pérez: Theatre package is made for surprise, have an impact and carry the message that it wants to bring to the Viewer. We do the work while maintaining the text absolutely faithful to Zorrilla. We bring it to the contemporary, because Spain, Andalusia and the world, in general, is full of "Don Juanes" and "Doña Juanas". We believe that it is a work that, told today, also makes sense.
Q: The message you want to give to the public, is let to a Don Juan and Doña Juana, and love us as people?
José Luis García-Pérez: Failure would do, without a doubt. It is fine, that it is already the world of "Don Juanes" and "Doña Juanas".
Q: What are those letters you have tattooed on the neck that can be seen on the official website of the play, www.donjuan2014.com??
José Luis García Pérez: Everything is removable. There are many tattoos on stage. There was a principle of this function, where we wanted to tell this "Don Juan" is close to the world of maras. Because in reality, there are two bands that concur at the beginning of the function on the gamble, that develops further drama. It is the band of Luis Mejia and Juan Tenorio's band. These two bands have their own symbols and hence those tattoos.
Q: Since we were waiting for an interpretation yours more Galan (handsome), not could you give us soon any?
José Luis García-Pérez: He will play whatever. At the moment, which plays is this. In what I'm doing now on TV, it is rather more "donjuanesco" in the old sense of the word. Fortunately, I have good luck to each character that I will be offering has fairly little to do with the former. Q: Film projects that you have "Lejos del mar" with Imanol Uribe and "El pais del miedo"...
José Luis García-Pérez: "El pais del miedo" is to be released soon and "Lejos del mar '' is in festivals where it is brand new, because it is a film that will have impact and that it has power, so it will be in the summer or after they are looking for.
Q: Do you obey your dream, that already to address "La señorita Julia"?
José Luis García-Pérez: The only thing that I really need, and which today is a pleasure, is time to finish the version and get into production. It is the thought, to the cast, but I need time for all this. But I'm looking forward to it.
