The work that demystifies the "Don Juan Tenorio" from José Zorilla, raises the curtain in the Teatro Cervantes of Málaga (12, 13 and 14 March) directed by Blanca Portillo and with a cast led by José Luis Garcia-Perez, from Seville, whom criticism qualifies as brilliant in the role of Don Juan, winning as best actor in different festivals, is one of the best-known faces on the Spanish scene, thanks to his work in films (Cachorro, Va a ser que nadie es perfecto, A puerta fria), theatre (La avería, Viejos tiempos, El gran teatro del mundo, Diario de un loco) and television (Guante Blanco, Amar en tiempos revueltos,Vive Cantando). He currently combines his performance of the play with the shooting of Carlos, Rey Emperador, a series to be released soon in TVE and where he plays as Hernán cortes.
This week you put on stage, at the Teatro Cervantes as Don Juan Tenorio, where you demystify the mythical character of Zorrilla, what Blanca Portillo does to the original work?
Absolutely everything. The text is exactly what wrote by Zorrilla and the only thing we do is read it from a point of view, our, we believe that it is closest to the author himself, in which Don Juan is not a hero, but a be quite depraved.
In this theatrical adaptation, that it is shown Tenorio as an assassin and abusive, how you defend at such character?
It is wonderful. As an actor it is wonderful, as a person seems to me more or less obnoxious as many other fictional characters, but to represent it, is a best gift has given to me as my job.
The work is the subject of critical acclaim, would you accept that it is the reason for the success?
I hope it is because we do it fairly well (laughs). I think really it's OK to call Don Juan Tenorio by name. In addition, I believe that the work is visually very spectacular and it is represented by a number of colleagues that are a wonderful cast. All that makes a very nice theater package and people are enjoying it.
As we have said before, is a version of Blanca Portillo, which already agreed in 2011 with La Avería, how it is to work under her orders?
It is fantastic. Blanca portillo is a great friend and excellent Director. She is a Director who manages to get as an actor a little beyond what you think that it is possible for you and that makes you grow, with which I have only gratitude towards her.
You are currently filming series Carlos, Rey Emperador, where you are playing the role of Hernán Cortes. What can you tell us about this character?
Hernan Cortes was a desire that it took me to make an absolute adventure. He was a person that was now adapted to the unknown people with improper courage, but as every human being has its contradictions. In this case you had them big and with the pace of life was changing in many ways, but I like to see it as a great adventurer.
How, you are combining the filming of the series with the long tour of Don Juan Tenorio?
Sleeping a little and traveling much. It is complicated, but unemployment in my area is very large, as in society in general, and this is a gift.
Yesterday the newspaper ABC published on cover, a supposed descent cultural VAT (from 21% to 10%) by the Government in the election period, do you think that they will finally meet it?
They have said it, good, that it is one thing that arise and who do not know when will happen, with which does not give a greater value. I believe that culture and science have been two of the large disadvantaged of this situation and both generate a society and a future for a country, so these are just lost years.
